Murkowski to Stay in Alaska Race (Establishment Senator will not leave without a fight)

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski Friday said that she plans to run as a write-in candidate in the November election for her seat, setting up a rematch between her and a tea party-backed candidate who beat her during the GOP primary.

The two-term senator announced her candidacy at a rally in downtown Anchorage Friday evening, saying she was staying in the race against fellow Republican Joe Miller and Democrat Scott McAdams. …

A survey released Sept. 2 by Anchorage pollster Dave Dittman found Ms. Murkowski would garner 37% of the general vote as a write-in candidate, compared to 31% for Mr. Miller and 19% for Mr. McAdams. The poll was commissioned by Andrew Halcro, a former state legislator and Republican who has supported her re-entering the race. …

But Dave Dittman, a pollster in Anchorage, said Ms. Murkowski likely would draw voters from the Democrat because they would view her as a moderate more likely to win against the conservative Mr. Miller. …

Mr. Miller couldn’t be reached to comment, but his supporters reacted with anger. “Today we have witnessed yet another example of Senator Lisa Murkowski’s desperate attempt to hold onto power by ignoring the will of the people,” Mike Dunton, a GOP district official in Fairbanks, said in a statement.
