ACORN: Tax cheat; Group faces huge IRS liens (Bertha lied to Fox’s Chris Wallace)
ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis told Fox News’ Chris Wallace that “we absolutely pays its taxes.” But the IRS and Louisiana’s taxmen have imposed nearly $2M in liens against ACORN’s New Orleans Ntl headquarters for non-payment since last Oct. Caught on tape advising a pimp and prostitue, their tax mess shows the lawlessness starts at its three national HQs — New Orleans, Washington, DC, and NYC.
The Pelican Institute for Public Policy, New Orleans, uncovered official records that confirm ACORN’s deadbeat tax status. (Full disclosure: Pelican hosted Murdock last May.)
At the Orleans Parish Clerk of Courts Office, a Sept. 3 IRS filing showed that “Elysian Fields Corp., Inc, (Alter Ego of ACORN)” skipped 5 quarterly withholding-tax payments — for income, Soc/Sec and Medicare levies in 2005-08, and made no federal unemployment-tax payments for the fourth quarters of 2007 and 2008. “We made a demand for payment, but it remains unpaid,” reads IRS form 668(Y). Federal taxmen have placed liens on ACORN’s offices at 2609 Canal St. and 2610 Iberville St, New Orleans.
Louisiana AG Bobby Caldwell subpoenaed ACORN, former ACORN head Wade Rathke, and the group’s bank, Whitney Bank…….seeking information back to 1998 on ACORN and some 361 tax-exempt and non-tax-exempt outfits in its universe.
Citizens Consulting, Inc. — ACORN’s bookkeeping arm, details 66 withholding-tax payments that Citizens Consulting skipped in 2002-08, totaling more than $300,000 (online at pelicaninstitute.org.)
Since 1989, at least $53 million federal tax dollars went to ACORN and its branches. Congress should go further and rescind its tax-exempt status.
