President Obama fires national community service inspector general

On June 11, 2009 Kenneth Bach was named acting Inspector General of the Corporation for National & Community Service.

This announcement was made after President Barack Obama fired the previous Inspector General of the Corporation for National & Community Service, Gerald Walpin.

The President wrote “it is vital that I have the fullest confidence in the appointees serving as Inspectors General.  That is no longer the case in regard to this Inspector General.”  Walpin was put on a 30 day suspension with pay to ensure that President Obama complies with the 2008 Inspector General Reform Act, which he sponsored.

The Corporation for National & Community Service is the nations largest grant maker supporting service and volunteering.  The corporation is responsible for the coordination and execution of the Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, VISTA, National Civilian Community Corps, and Learn and Serve America programs.  The Corporation for National & Community Service was created by 1993 and has over a 1 billion dollar per year budget.
