OBAMA RECEIVES UNHAPPY WELCOME - WHY G-20 DOESN’T LOVE OBAMA
A FEW months ago, the so phisticated view was that President Obama would be welcomed at the G-20 summit in London today not as America’s first black president but as its first “European” president.
His victory last November signified that America had seen the light of European social democracy. Americans would now have socialized medicine, higher welfare spending, more economic regulation and a larger government — just like Europe. Transatlantic cooperation would now be that much easier.
It hasn’t turned out that way.
Yes, welfare, regulation, spending and government are all on the rise in America, and some form of socialized medicine looks likely. So why aren’t Europe’s leaders cheering?
Because their agendas largely conflict with his own.
Start with the trickiest long-term problem — Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. For all the Obama administration’s hopes to begin improving Russo-American relations, it takes two to really hit the “reset” button.
Medvedev claims that the Kremlin also wants better ties. But Moscow seems to want other things more — such as restoring its old power over former satellites and challenging US power worldwide.
