Right Direction or Wrong Track - 26% Say U.S. is Moving in the Right Direction

Twenty-six percent (26%) of American voters say the nation is moving in the right direction, while 66% say it is heading down the wrong track, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

The number of voters who think America is moving in the right direction is down slightly from last week’s high of 29%, but it marks the third straight week in which over a quarter of voters share that opinion despite increasing bad economic news.

Last week, 62% said the nation was heading down the wrong track. Clearly voters remain at least somewhat confident that President Obama is taking the country in the right direction.

Confidence among men fell slightly from 27% last week to 23% this week. Among women, 29% say the nation is heading in the right direction, down from 31% a week ago. Seventy (70%) of men and 61% of women think the United States is going down the wrong track.

Last week, the majority of black voters (55%) said the United States is heading in the right direction. This week, the percentage slipped to 47%. Just over one-in-three blacks (35%) say America is going down the wrong track, up from 30% last week. Twenty-two percent (22%) of white voters hold a positive view of America’s direction, compared to 25% last week. Seventy-one percent (71%) of whites say the nation is heading down the wrong track, up from 67% in the previous poll.

Voters between the ages of 18-29 are no longer the most optimistic age group as they were in the previous survey. Now 27% in that group say the nation is heading in the right direction, down from 37% a week ago.
