KnoxNews: She sang Obama Praises but Voted McCain - The Bradley Effect - a first-person Tennessee tale
http://blogs.knoxnews.com/knx/granju/2008/11/the-bradley-effect-a-firstpers.htmlAn e-mail from a friend who attended the Tennessee Titans game in Nashville yesterday:
There is a group of us who generally tailgate together. Among them is a
teacher from another middle Tennessee town near Nashville. Yesterday, she asked me if I had voted, and I told her I had voted for Obama and I sure hope he wins. She agreed and said she hopes he wins too and then went on to say she can’t stand Sarah Palin and thinks it would be a national disaster if she wound up as president. I asked if she had voted yet, and she said she had voted for McCain. “But you said you want Obama to win,” I replied. “Why did you vote for John McCain?” Here is her response - almost verbatim:“I went into the polling place planning to vote for Obama, but when I got into the booth, I just couldn’t do it so I voted for McCain.” She said if anyone had asked her who she was voting for, she would have said Obama until the moment when she put her finger on the button.
I asked her whether it’s because he’s black. She looked sheepish and said, “yes.” Then she proceeded to sing Obama’s praises and talk about how well-educated and bright he is and how she thinks he will be a good president if he wins.

So see, the “Bradley Effect”, if it exists, will be something that Dems can blame themselves for if Obama loses. Then again, considering the Democrat Party has long and deep roots into the old south, the Dixiecrats and the KKK, we shouldn’t be surprised that that’s the political party in which most of the racists in our nation belong.
Obama isn’t going to lose, but if he does, it won’t be because of race as he himself has said many times. It will be because negative campaigning and the fear factor once again proved effective.
But I don’t think that will be the case. From Libby Dole to Michelle Bachmann, politicians who have tried to use those old tactics have seen them backfire. And, tomorrow, John and Sarah will learn that lesson as well. The American people are sick and tired of mud throwers and impressed by candidates who appeal to their better nature.
In 1992, I heard an elderly woman repulse all logical argument against Clinton with, “But I like Clinton. He’s such a nice-looking young man.”
With approaches to choosing our leaders such as that and the teacher from Tennessee, it’s no wonder we keep electing these clowns.
And this latter example is a teacher! She’s supposedly not only educated but is teaching others, and her decision is based on - what exactly?!
The saying is right: Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.
We may well see white Democrats voting against a black (and that will be condemned as racist). And we may well see a lot of blacks voting for a black (and that will be seen as loyalty). But I know for certain that we’ll see a LOT of people vote for Obama even though their values are the extreme opposite of his, simply because they ALWAYS vote Democrat, ever since FDR saved us from the Depression.
Obama has said he’d close the coal mines, but I’m betting he’ll get the votes of a lot of coal miners because they’re union all the way and Democrat all the way! Yup. They’ll be voting for their own unemployment!

It’s very sad how persistent the sickness of racism in some people is. But tomorrow will give people of good will lots to cheer about.
