New era heralded as Pope posts prayer in the Wailing Wall

The Pope delighted the Israelis by going to their sacred place and leaving the text of a prayer among the ancient stones. Some Jews had felt uneasy about a Christian leader, with a cross around his neck, going to the wall, which is the only remaining part of the Second Temple, destroyed in AD 70.

But the text calmed their concerns. It was a printed and signed copy of a prayer for forgiveness for sins against the Jews uttered at the Vatican on March 12. It said: “God of our fathers, you chose Abraham and his descendants to bring your name to the nations. We are deeply saddened by the behaviour of those who in the course of history have caused these children of yours to suffer, and asking your forgiveness, we wish to commit ourselves to genuine brotherhood with the people of the Covenant.”

After consigning his prayer to the stones, the Pope made the sign of the cross, prayed a moment, then stepped back. Rabbi Michael Melchior, a cabinet minister who welcomed the Pope to the wall, acknowledged that Jews had a psychological problem with the cross - seen as a symbol hostile to Judaism. But he said: “I think that what’s important is not the cross. It’s that he touched the wall and the wall touched him.”
